Ravel’s first orchestral endeavor was an opera based on The Arabian Nights, entitled Shéhérazade. Although he failed to realize that ambitious project beyond an ill-fated overture, the composer remained captivated by the exotic sounds, rhythms and stories of the East. A collection of poems, also called Shéhérazade, by French poet Tristan Klingsore provided the catalyst for his second -- and this time successful -- tribute to the seductive Shéhérazade. Ravel was so smitten with the beauty of Klingsore’s verses that he set three of them to music: Asie, La Flûte enchantée, and L'Indifférent. Many years later, the composer revealed that originally he had in mind a male voice, but "only women singers with strong musical backgrounds had shown an interest in them."
